Morgan Schmoll's "What does Sustainability mean to you"

Page history last edited by Morgan Schmoll 3 years, 5 months ago

According to Wikipedia, Sustainability is the capacity to maintain a certain process or state of indefinitly.

This makes me think of Sustainability being that act of living forever. Wikipedia says that this term is more and more being applied to living creatures, therefore it may not be "living forever" but it colud be an "idea" that lasts forever. kind of like, going down in history maybe. Something that makes one "live forever". Thats how I really think of this word.

1. Ecology

This link said "ecology" and when I was reading the article I wanted to read about it. It took me to another Wikipedia article with a million more links on it.

2. Origin of life

I chose this one because, who isn't interested in the "Origin of life". Although some of us see it very different than others do.

This took me to yet ANOTHER wikipedia site, I need to stop this.

...actually I just learned that any site I go to from a wikipedia page...its just going to take me to another wikipedia page!!

3. Extinctions

False alarm, I thought this took me to a completly different page, nope. The same page as "Sustainability" just further down. Lame. I did read that humans are causing mass extinctions though. Wow

4. Extremophiles

I thought this word was cool. Its actually an organism that thrives in physically harsh conditions that would kill all other life on earth. Like extremly extremly hot and even cold temperatures.

5. Svalbard

I ended up at the link called Svalbard bacuse I was looking at the Extremophiles link and it was talking about how those are orgainisms that could exist in extreme environment. So then I went to the Extreme environment link and it was telling me where exactly there were extreme environments and from there I found the link Svalbard. Svalbard is an Archipelago, a chain or cluster of islands, that lies in the middle of Norway and the North Pole. It says that the temperature lies anywhere from -5C in the winter and -16C in the summer. The whole reason I went to this link is because it said that only Extremophilies live there because of the extreme temperature but then at the Svalbard link it said that the population was about a little under 2,400. Whatever.

Globalization

This website caught my eye becuase I am in World Regional Geography which is all about Globalization and Diverstiy. I think they should add diversity into this wikipedia website because along with Golablization, the westernization of the world, comes diversity, they come hand in hand. Personally I don't like wikipedia, I think that alot of the time it gives false information. I think there is so much more that can be added into this wedsite. Globalization effects alot about the world, it effects people, the environment, and the economy. Although I do agree with Globalization there is always two sides to every story. Some people are pro Globalization but many are not because they want to keep their own idenitites and cultures. They believe we are all becoming one by westernizing everything and loosing our since of individuality. A good example of this would be McDonalds, they are all over the world. There is a new McDonalsd opending up every 10 minutes. Thats crazy!! Globalization also effects the economy, many countries believe it helps all the countries around the world, but other countries say that it just helps the already rich countires and keeps the poor ones poor, which would be why America is so pro Globalization, and countries like Iraq are not. A very bad side to Globalization is the way it effects the environment. Many places are becoming destroyed because of the effects of humans. We are cutting down rainforests to build on. We are polluting the waters with our industrial waste which kills fish, other animals, and can also make people sick. I have touched on a few good and bad points about Globalization, althought I am not an expert, infact I have only been in the class for about a week. I mean don't get me wrong, there is alot more too it but now that you read this hopefully you learned a small amount more about Globalization. I feel like im not making any since any more..so im more then done with this assignment.
