license argument

After watching the video about open sources, I have become indecisive on the subject(which is strange because I always have an opinion). I think open sources are a great idea but I do not like the idea of copyrighting knowledge. I think everyone should be entitled to receive knowledge and education and the information necessary, but I also believe that people should receive credit for their own work. I don't think it's fair that someone should put so much effort and time into something they write, just so it can be taken by some one else to put their name on it . Copyrights prevent an illegal act of plagerizing and protect the author, but they ensure that students are doing their own work and actually learning something rather than taking the easy way out by using someone elses work and turning it in as if it were their own. That wouldn't be fair to the student or the person who wrote it. I know that if I were an author I would not like to find out that someone has used my work that I put a great deal of time, effort, and thought into, and claimed it as their own. At the same time though, I think that if someone is not going to copyright their work, especially in an open source community, they should be aware of the fact that their work is free for anyone to use.
