This insight bears repeating and further development. In a way Nietzsche's Geneology of Morals is an argument connecting the history of debt with the history of morality. And so here we are!

Ah... Nietzsche
"a recompense in the form of a kind of pleasure - the pleasure of being allowed to vent his power freely upon one who is powerless - the voluptuous pleasure - de faire le mal pour le plastir de la faire" - of doing evil for the pleasure of doing it. Debt always favors the debtor, it is the reason we become debtors. No matter what our standing in the social order. Actually "the enjoyment of violation... will be greater the lower the creditor stands in the social order..." So I guess he means all of us can get a little juice from "helping our fellow man."
The currency of fear becomes a debt to all who is affected. Those who develop fear prey on the feeling of indebtedness to those who can give the illusion of comfort, either financially (money) or intellectually (awareness of a conspiracy). Do we not feel a debt to those who give us an insight towards the "truth?" Wasn't "Deep Throat" of Watergate fame considered a kind of hero for telling Woodward and Bernstein the truth?
This is where both sides of the Zeitgeist argument uses fear as a form of currency. We are indebted to all those who either enlighten or enrich us. The ones who are fearful of overwhelming conspiracy versus those feeding on the carcass of a complacent citizenry, who are just wanting their Xboxes and Madden 09. By knowing we are controlled makes us to a degree grateful to the whisleblower. There are laws protecting those who blow the whistle. They are doing the "right" thing, certainly a moral stand. It explaines why Michael Moore is popular.
Money is the objectification of the base nature of comfort. The more money we have, the more "comfort" we obtain (illusory or not). That is what make this economic kerfuffle so annoying... money equals lack of fear. The Fed is America's salve, and like lotion on a sunburn - but who is applying the ointment?
(if it isn't a beautiful blonde... I'll have none of it.... heh heh heh - sorry to be crude)
How 'bout this... The reason the rich need to be taxed (ooh bad word!) is they would not be rich if not for the work of others. Name anyone (short of inheritance - lazy - or lottery winners - rare) that has not made a fortune on others. A small business has employees, who are part of the social structure. Pay them fair and you don't need so many taxes! But until then, America took care of you by giving you the structure to create your own success, so... drum roll please... you gotta take care of America! Code word: taxes.
I love rich people who after they become rich, start jumping out of airplanes or base jumping, or some other fearful activity. If they want some real fear, take away all their money, and give 'em a couple of extra mouths to feed or a mortgage to meet. Now that is fear. Good 'ol American fear.
The NEW America - Profit is individual and private, Loss is public and social.
Thanks Wall Street!
