Brandon Reed Green computing project

Page history last edited by Brandon Reed 3 years, 8 months ago

Green computing is the study and practice of using computing resources efficiently. The primary objective of such a program is to account for the triple bottom line, an expanded spectrum of values and criteria for measuring organizational (and societal) success. The goals are similar to green chemistry; reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.

a) conduct an ethnography

vistit, observe, and create a description of a community center, school, or nonprofit here in St. Pete. collect brochures, mission statements, and other literature that will help you compose your description. This description will help you design questions for your interview.

The St. Petersburg Welcome Center is the ideal place for new and prospective students to learn more about what the campus can offer.  It offers tours, ticket purchasing, brochures about clubs, etc.  As far as green computing is concerned, they practice different methods to help conserve energy.

b) conduct an interview.

From your description, script questions hinging on this issue: "green computing." Arrange and conduct an interview with an employee or stakeholder at your site. Record the interview by either taking notes, recording audio, or recording video.

1.  So what is the main purpose of the USFSP Welcome Center?

Basically to introduce new students to the USFSP campus and show them what the campus offers.  Our staff is also always available to answer any questions students may have about the campus, on or off duty!

2.  What tours do you offer here?

We offer the same tour at different times.  One at 10:00am and another at 2:00pm.  They both take students around the campus and show them the different buildings lectures are held, where important buildings are, and recreational facilities on campus.

3.  How does your facility practice green computing everyday?

Actually we just started emailing out flyers about different events the Welcome Center is sponsoring instead of printing them to reduce the waste of paper!

4.  Do you guys leave computers on overnight?

Nope!  We turn the computers off overnight along with the lights, and we're all about going green.

c) prepare a brief feasibility report: evaluate the scenario, make a recommendation concerning green computing. Would your site have any use for green computing? Share these potentials with the wiki.

The USFSP Welcome center is doing a good job at computing resources efficiently.  Emailing instead of printing flyers helps conserve a lot of resources and also prevents pollution.  Also their turning off lights after the day is over contributes to conservation as well.   As a result of most of their interaction with students being physical, green computing doesn't play a huge role in their industry.  For what part they are participating in, they're doing a great job!
