Unit One Portfolio-Jaime Grullon

What is your thesis? How did this particular argument come about?

My thesis is that politics has impacted our world with more than just elections and wars. It is politics that has led to the way we define major principles. Politicians' actions have created and developed ideals that have changed our world forever. The argument came from my own interest into diving deeper into the idea that the role and impact of politics has been blurred for the past few years.

Who's your audience and what techniques do you use to make your writing speak to their concerns and interests?

My audience is anyone interested in the argument of politics vs. the world. Anyone who, like me, is interested in the lines governments around the world have drawn for us that we dont think about. I define many terms people may not be completely sure of. I then list examples and cross examinations of existing social and economic orders.

Upon reviewing your completed composition (and process), what aspect of your work (or it's process) most surprised you?

I was surprised I could write so much about this topic. When writin my rough draft, I started off strong but then just ran into a huge wall and couldnt expand on my ideas anymore. Thankfully, with the help of my peers, I was steered off in the right direction and came up with much more information.

Did you learn anything new while growing your composition? Explain.

Absolutely. Like I said, my rough draft really encompasses the prior knowledge I had about this topic. It was only after reading my peer reviews and then researching more that Iearned several things such as the effects of the American economy on the rest of the worlds. Also, the positives and negatives of universal health care, like the fact that if the health care is private, the quality will be better, while if its free, you have to sacrifice some of the calibur of the treatment received.

When you use secondary sources, do those sources contribute to ethos, logos, or pathos appeals?

I try to make my sources bring a little bit of each appeal into my writing. For example, my article about capitalism vs. democracy I think appealed towards logos and ethos, while the article about Chavez appeals to pathos.

When considering peer feedback as you revised your rough draft, which advice/suggestion/question/criticism/edit was most useful/helpful?

It was definitely when my peers encouraged me to expand on minor details and definitions that allowed me to broaden the scope of my writing and truly open up about my essay.

On your final version, where would you like to see the most feedback and attention from graders?

I cant say I have a specific branch of my writing in mind, but I guess I would like to have my graders find areas of my writing where I could improve or grow, rather than just tell me where its wrong.
